Everything You Need To Know About Central vs. Forced Air Systems

Keeping your home warm as the temperature drops or cool in the summer months is important if you want to relax and enjoy your time at home. However, there are several different options when it comes to heating. It’s important to understand what they are and which one is best for your home.

It should be noted that, for expert advice and fitting, you’re best off speaking to the experts in commercial air conditioning. This will help to ensure you get all the help you need to keep your house at the right temperature.

Forced Air Systems

A forced air system uses a furnace, which can run on gas, oil, wood, or electricity. It can also be powered via a heat pump. The heat source heats the surrounding air and this is then pushed through your house along a set of vents.

The furnace or pump will bring cold air in from outside the house and heat it while removing allergens. A thermostat tells the heater source when the home is warm enough and stops the airflow, until the temperature drops and it comes back on.

Central Systems

These are primarily a type of cooling system. It also brings air in from outside and passes it through refrigerant-filled pipes which extract the heat. This creates cold air which is moved through your home in the same way as a forced air system. In short, the air is delivered to each room via ducts, cooling your home.

Once the right temperature is reached the system stops pulling the heat out of the air. It restarts when the thermostat rises and the temperature needs to be reduced again.

The bottom line is simple, central air systems are designed to cool homes, and forced air systems are designed to heat homes. You may need to invest in both.

Advantages Of Forced Air

One of the main advantages of forced air systems is that they move the air through a filter and remove allergens. That means the air in your home is cleaner and less likely to make family members sick. That’s especially relevant if you have family members with allergies.

Alongside this, forced air systems that work with heat pumps are now significantly more efficient than fossil fuel heating options. In short, it will cost you less and reduce the level of damage being done to the environment.

It’s also worth noting that a forced air system can be used for heating and cooling. The central air system is only used for cooling. This makes the forced air system a better choice.

However, it should be noted that if any ducts are blocked or partially blocked the heat or cooling will be unevenly distributed. You may also notice a constant hum as the forced air system does its job. Most people tune the sound out but, if you can’t, it’s likely to be annoying. This is worse if the ducts have been undersized.
